Surgery was BETTER than I thought!

39 year old man

Introduction: I'm a 39 year old male, who has battled weight since puberty. My sister had RNY 2 years ago, my mother had it last month. My youngest sister had the Lap-Band last month, and my brother is investigating both, (he has been approved for Lap Band by insurance). Needless to say, Obesity runs in the family.

Path: A little over a year ago, May 2006, I attempted qualification for Lap-Band, but insurance shut me down. BMI was 38.5 and my co-morbidities weren’t morbid enough...so no go. Also, I found out that the Doctors weren't part of my Insurance network. So, when my mother got approved, I checked those doctors, (they are in my network), and my weight had gone up so my BMI was 40.5...Bingo qualified in 1 Day. The Doctors said they have never seen anything like it.

Surgery: I prepared for surgery by doing low Carb, clear liquid diet for 10 days prior to surgery. I also used some Sonne's Intestinal cleansers, to speed the purification process along. I also, did a lot of walking. I was 5'9" tall and 275 lbs, before surgery. I lost 14 lbs in 10 days doing the liquid diet. I went in on Friday June 15th at noon, and surgery started at 3 PM and ended 1.5 hours later. by 11PM that night I was feeling good and walking around the surgery floor. For me, the process could not have gone better. The only real discomfort I had was gas build up 24 hours after surgery. (They pump you full of gas so the probes can move around). By noon on Sunday (Fathers Day) Today! I was home feeling good. I took a nap and mowed my front yard, then went on a 1-mile walk. My current weight at this point, is 258 lbs.

Post Surgery: Post Surgery has just began, for me but I feel good, don't need any pain medication, just 48 hours after surgery. So, needless to say, if went better than I expected. But I went in with good preparation and a very positive attitude.

Relationships: Most of my friends can't believe I've had the surgery. Feeling good....

Advice: I think positive attitude and preparation go along way to a good experience. Everyone kept asking me if I was nervous. My response was always, "No, I'm excited and can't wait!"
